so here are my thoughts and musings about my new minimalist wardrobe project.
first, it's not really minimalist in an artistic sense, though i have found that the shapes and lines that work best with my body tend to be fairly clean and spare. i have hips and thighs, etc. so i tend to favor late 50s early 60s designs. that's the nice thing about getting to this age in life, you have sort of figured that much out, and your shape probably won't change too drastically. but the fact that one tends to spend one's time thinking about this sort of thing at all (or at least, the fact that i have done so) is what brought me to this project.
let me digress. i have attempted to fashion a minimalist wardrobe as regards quantity, but i have a little excess. my idea was enough clothing for a week, but i have a bit more than that. i may still have some paring to do.
but color wise, i have decided on black only.
so this is the project. i have just what i need. just enough of what i need, and hopefully not more. i am tired of putting so much energy into what i cover my body with. i appreciate fashion, but i want to use my energy to focus on other things.
i am drawn to the idea of not having to think about what to put on in the morning. sure, there are still things like shape and texture to be considered, but i like the idea of eliminating a variable. there is a subtlety in acknowledging that there is more to design than color. i was getting lost in color. i feel more grounded in what feels right to me in terms of shape and line and all of these other variables than in terms of color, so there you have it.
i will have to wait until i get home to assess the practicality of my other-season items. that's the irony ... part of the my reason for doing this is that i am tired of shopping. but deciding to do this required some shopping. that being considered, once i have designed what i think is a workable wardrobe, my plan is to have a moratorium on purchasing new items unless something essential is no longer viable, and then to replace it.
i wish i knew how to sew. maybe it's time to finally learn.
anyway, it's sort of daunting and exciting and liberating all at once to take on commitment like this. i'll update as i go.
oh - when i told my mom about my idea, she asked me if i was thinking like the brown dress lady. i hadn't heard of her until she mentioned it, and then i saw a link to her site on fashion spot. my ideas building up to this have been very similar to some of those expressed in her statement.
researching her project brought me to the work of andrea zittel and her six month uniforms. interesting stuff.

I've lately started buying really gawdy hawaiian shirts and flourescent ties just to spice things up...
Go figure :D
